It says a lot when a design project takes your breath away, even with a gorgeous backdrop such as the rolling hills and canyons of Calabasas, California. Yet the Lima Residence designed and constructed by Abramson Teiger Architects has achieved just that.
The success of this project may be due in part of the intelligent choices made throughout the initial design project by the design team. It was never a thought to fight against such a beautifully natural landscape, but instead to display it. The first decision strategically positioned a series of connected folding roof and wall planes clad in metal to accentuate views of the canyon below and mountains beyond. At points, the folded walls lift up revealing poured-in-place concrete walls that enclose much of the first floor spaces. The rectangular house form consists of the main living building (including patio, kitchen, and dining room) and the garage/guest building – the two being separated by a lovely green courtyard. The long side of the compound is composed primarily of large glass doors and windows, and where the exterior view can be appreciated to its fullest. Within the living spaces, the open plan is achieved by the use of high ceilings and clear story windows.
All of the projects conceptualized by Abramson Teiger Architects are truly exquisite, and with so many, one may blend into the next. But the Lima Residence is a project to take a moment rest your eyes on.
