As health awareness increases among the general population, health and nutrition are becoming an increasingly important topic within society. So many health professionals, public relations companies, and nutrition companies are hard at work trying to create the next best diet. Have you ever heard of the Atkins diet? Or maybe you’ve heard about a vegan diet? At some point, you’re guaranteed to hear about another fad diet. But like most fads, these diets will eventually fade away to nothing. However, when you’re constantly bombarded with all this dietary information, meal planning can be quite difficult. As of late, the vegan diet has been heavily promoted. The vegan diet is about avoiding meat and eating mostly organic foods. Despite the vegan diet, meat-consumption has reached a record high! This is all due to the popularity of another diet: the Paleo Diet.

The Paleo diet advocates eating more fresh foods in lieu of prepackaged meals, frozen, and processed food.  The Paleo diet is centered in one simple principle: eat what our Paleolithic ancestors ate. After thorough research, it was discovered that Paleolithic humans suffered from less disease and had longer life spans. As a result, the researchers hypothesized that it was directly related to their diets.  Essentially, Paleolithic humans ate fewer amounts of carbohydrates such as cereals, oats, and grains.

If you’re an advocate of fresh foods and meat, then you will probably find the Paleo diet perfect for you. The main key to the Paleo diet’s success is that it includes meat. Meat has been proven to be an essential part of our diet. However, the current vegan diet advocates a eating less meat. The Paleo diet might be a better alternative to the vegan diet for the following reasons:

 

  • ·      Transporting vegetables, cereals, and fruits creates more greenhouse gas emissions than transporting fish, chicken, or red meat.  This is according to the research done by H. Scott Matthews and Christopher Weber who are two well-known environmental researchers.
  • ·      Grass-fed farm animals are a vital part of the sustainable agriculture. The demand for meat will increase livestock production, which will increase the level of sustainable agriculture.
  • ·      The growing recognition of soy as the staple food among the vegans is accountable for intense deforestation in Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil.  Soy is also heavily processed.

 

These are only a few advantages of the Paleo diet. While the Paleo diet isn’t marketed as an environmentally friendly diet, it does benefit the environment in latent ways. Since the Paleo diet is becoming another fad diet, it’s constantly under scrutiny from vegetarians. Scrutiny is great for a diet; it will test the validity of the diet, and it will also get people to think about what they’re putting in their bodies.
