It may not be entirely accurate because all the figures are only assessed value. In parentheses next to the name is the athlete’s average annual income.

10. Valentino Rossi (motorcycle racing driver – $ 35 million)

Rossi earns about $ 35 million a year. This includes his salary for the Yamaha team as well as earnings from sponsors, mostly from Fiat and AGV helmet. He won the motorcycle championship in 2009 and it is rumored that he wants to drive in the Formula 1 Championship.

9. Fernando Alonso(driver, Formula 1 – $ 35 million)

Alonso had a four-year contract with McLaren worth 40 million dollars a year in the period 2007-2010. Fernando is driving for Ferrari now.

8. Alex Rodriguez (Baseball – $ 39 million)

One of the best baseball players in the world earned a whopping 29 million last season with an additional 6 million dollars from sponsors. That places him on the eighth place with $ 39 million.

7. Lionel Messi (Football – $ 39 million)

Messi was the best player in the world in 2009 and during his career he has only played for one team – Barcelona. He is only 22 years old.

6. Manny Pacquiao (Box – $ 40 million)

The surprise here is that the largest salary in boxing isn’t earned by an American boxer from superheavy category. Manny is the main target for most of today’s top boxers.

5. Lebron James(NBA – $ 40 million)

Lebron James has a salary of 12.5 million and another 28 million dollars he earns from sponsorship deals, which puts him immediately on the 5th place of our lists with the total income that exceeds $ 40 million a year.

4. Kimi Raikkonen(driver, Formula 1 – $ 41 million)

Ferrari made Raikkonen the most paid driver when they signed him to a three-year contract. However, Kimi didn’t have a brilliant season and decided to temporarily quit e formula and return to World Rally Championship.

3. David Beckham (Football – $ 45 million)

Beckham has made a splash when he decided to cross to America to play football. However, constant injuries prevented him to play much of the season and he rested on the bench. Most of its revenue comes from sponsors such as Adidas, Motorola and Pepsi.

2. Phil Mickelson (Golf – $ 62 million)

It is not surprising that a golfer is on second place on the list, but it is strange that he holds this place with an average annual salary of “only” 9.3 million. However, due to sponsorship contracts that exceed the figure of $ 53 million, his average annual income is about $ 62 million. So, we can rightfully say that he definitely deserves to be on this list.

1. Tiger Woods (Golf – $ 100 million)

Still in his early thirties, Tiger Woods earned 23 million on the field is the last season, as well as a whopping 105 million dollars which he earned from the sponsors! This placed him on the first placefor the fifth consecutive year. However, this may not be the case this year. Because of his various scandals and adulteries, most of the sponsors may cancel their contracts with him.

There will be a number of attractions, including rides for children of all ages and the world’s fastest rollercoaster, travelling at speeds exceeding 124 mph. Another ride will rocket passengers through the roof and to a height of 203 feet to simulate the G-forces experienced by a drivers in an F1 car.

Due to energy crisis the scientists making efforts to discover new and less expensive ways for running the vehicles. At the end they discover a wonderful concept to use the energy of Sun light. This concept is called Solar Energy.

Scientists are making new cars which will be called Solar Powered Cars, which are designed totally on solar concept. These will be best performance and used the sun light as fuel.

1 ) The Solar-Powered Volvo

This is neither confirmed news nor is it something that the organizers of the grueling race are planning for come the year 2015. But this very well could be the way Dakar Rally goes considering the shape which auto industry is taking and with growing prices and demand for fossil fuel. The concept is based on a hybrid drive train, combining fuel cell, solar energy to support the diesel aggregate, all together delivering electricity to the hub motors in each of the wheels. The shape is meant to challenge the conventional truck format, and explore aerodynamic improvements within a Volvo identity. The Dakar Rally is the showcase for the new vehicle, and the vehicle is commercially targeted towards emergency situations, as a rescue vehicle or mobile hospital.

2 ) The Italdesign Giugiaro Quaranta

The “Quaranta” project is a concept car designed to celebrate Italdesign Giugiaro’s forty years of business in styling and technological research at the service of the automotive sector.

The Italdesign Giugiaro Quaranta, world-premiered at the 2008 Geneva International Motor Show, is a synthesis of Italdesign Giugiaro’s unmatched experience of automotive design: from city cars to super sports-cars, from MPVs to medium-engined saloons up to and including luxury flagships and environment-friendly SUV, not to mention light/heavy duty commercial vehicles, in complete cooperation with leading manufacturers all over the world.

The Italdesign Giugiaro Quaranta is an “extreme” product, an environment-friendly, 4WD super sports-car which incorporates a series of innovative aspects: its styling, but also its drive technology, which combines a hybrid engine with solar energy, and its internal layout which, despite its mid-mounted rear engine, can accommodate three adults and a child, also providing a generous luggage compartment.

3 ) The Antro Solo

The Antro Solo is a solar, human and gas-electric hybrid vehicle. It looks like nothing else out there, and has a fuel efficiency of more than 150 miles per gallon! The Antro Solo is a three seat gas-electric hybrid prototype made entirely out of carbon fiber. This material choice allowed the graphic designers to lower the weight of the vehicle to a measly 270kg. This also allowed them to achieve phenomenal fuel efficiency and a pretty decent top speed of 87mph.

All of this is impressive enough, but the Solo’s designers were not content to stop there. In order to maximize the efficiency of the vehicle, the designers installed solar panels on the roof. These solar panels store energy in the car’s batteries which can be used for short 15-25km trips. If there hasn’t been enough sun to power the batteries, each passenger’s seat comes equipped with pedals that can power the vehicles generator.

If you are by yourself, or everyone gets tired, the car can switch to its small combustion engine that is capable of running on petrol or ethanol. The prototype was shown at the Budapest Museum of Transport.

It is set to go into production in 2012, and expected to cost around $20,000 dollars.

4 ) The Enigma

The futuristic Enigma car project is intended to represent the height of automotive exclusivity. You could argue that the only thing that separates one Veyron or Phantom from the other is the color and trim that the first owner specifies from new, whereas with Enigma, the patination of the bronze on the roof of the car would develop with the owner over time. When the car is sold to its next owner, it would be taken back to the factory, the body panels removed and would be retained as a piece of automotive sculpture for their beautiful landscaped gardens.

The next owner would get a new piece of bronze to start their own story. Paul Howse, the designer, really wanted it to be like a sculpture on wheels, a work of art.

5 ) The Lotus Eco Elise

The Lotus Eco Elise project promotes a different perspective on “green”, one which does not revolve solely around tailpipe CO2. This holistic approach is in keeping with the progressive Lotus culture, driving Lotus to become the world’s green automotive consultancy. Sustainable materials, hemp, eco wool and sisal have been developed for body panels and trim and, combined with hi-tech water based paint solutions, showcase new affordable green technologies.

The green credentials of the technology on show in the Lotus Eco Elise have been analysed throughout the lifecycle of the car. A green gear change display has been integrated into the dashboard to promote greener driving as well as a weight reduction programme, illustrating the holistic approach taken. The energy expended to manufacture the car has been evaluated, working to the 3R’s – Reduce, Re-use and Recycle.

Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc commented “This Eco Elise is a great example of the advanced and affordable green technologies Lotus is developing. We are at the cutting edge of environmental technology and are determined to push forward with our green agenda. The Lotus brand values of lightweight, fuel efficient, and high performance are more relevant today than they ever have been.

We are keen to ensure that Lotus as a company and its products offer an ethical, green option that appeals to our customers”.

In keeping with the “performance through light weight” philosophy, the Lotus Eco Elise weighs 32 kg (70.5 lbs) less than the standard Lotus Elise S, which means that the efficient Elise S engine in the Lotus Eco Elise will give higher fuel economy figures and even better performance.

6 ) The Peugeot Shoo

‘Peugeot Shoo’ is something that is all about solar glow. The car is designed in a stable triangle shape to give it plenty of design and a lot of space as well. It has a solar roof enabling energy of the sun to be capture and transformed to run its electrical engine. The car is not only a zero-emission vehicle but even the power for its electric engine is from alternate sources making it truly and completely eco-friendly.

While the car can tango on its pretty awesome suspension, it amalgamates the features of ergonomic design with clean power to deliver big time. Now just don’t hold your breath on this one coming to the roads!

7 ) The Koenigsegg Quant

Swedish supercar marque Koenigsegg and NLV Solar AG, a pioneer in photovoltaics and accumulator technology, have joined forces to create the Koenigsegg Quant Concept. The brainchild of this marriage of power and energy is a four-seater solar electric car. A full-scale model is to be unveiled at the 2009 Geneva Salon, with the two companies currently working on running prototypes to scale up for series production.

The project was born when NLV Solar AG commissioned the environmentally aware Swedish supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg to develop and design a “car of the future”, incorporating NLV Solar’s groundbreaking, proprietary technology in the felds of photovoltaics and accumulators.

In 2008, the two companies signed a co-operation agreement to create a test vehicle for a unique propulsion system which makes optimum use of the solar technologies developed by NLV Solar AG, allied with an innovative accumulator unit. The groundbreaking thin-flm solar-cell coating is being implemented in one of Koenigsegg’s signature avant-garde designs.

8 ) The Eve

The EVE concept is a passenger car that runs on both electric and solar power. The windshield carries a coating for solar energy storage, while the electric energy serves as the primary power option. A color changing car is always cool. And with an eccentric design thrown in, the appeal is further enhanced. The EVE concept may not sound like a car you would see anytime soon, but when it does see a market launch, rest assured you aren’t going to get enough of it.

9 ) The SEAT Brisa

Hail to the fabulously crafted backless sports mobile concept from Spain called ‘Seat Brisa’ (Breeze in Spanish). Apart from being posh, this slender car designed by talented Miguel Ángel Iranzo Sánchez is also enormously environment friendly. The sturdy vehicle with trendy yet comfortable seating thrusts on sun power, while the nano-photovoltaic cells within its semi-transparent covering translates power to the rear wheel. Thus the automobile uses nature as its driving force and is geared with killer looks making the stylishly crafted Brisa worth every effort by the designer.

We were not meant to be couch potatoes, that only walk to and from the car. Believe it or not, I personally workout three times a week. I don’t force myself either. I’m literally exited to go workout, and release built up stress. It’s like an addiction I can’t explain. However I did read an article that said a special chemical gets released in your brain when you do physical exercising. Maybe that’s the reason I can’t stop. If that indeed is the case, I’m glad I have an addiction to staying fit!

According to Center of Disease Control, one-third of U.S. adults (33.8%) are obese. If that doesn’t sound bad, approximately 17% (or 12.5 million) of children and adolescents aged 2—19 years are obese. This is nothing to be proud of, and we need to change those numbers. So how can a lazy person lose the unwanted weight? One might say by exercising.

I would agree 100% that exercising is a great option. However here is the down side, you are dealing with lazy people. How do lazy people think they can lose weight?Simple, by using harmful weight-loss drugs. Later on they find out that the commercials were too good too be true. Now the only option left (without using liposuction) is to actually workout at a gym.

What most people don’t realize, is that the weight loss companies praise unhealthy foods and restaurants. Why you ask? Simple, that unhealthy food is creating potential consumers for their product. Whether you thinks that true or not, is up to you. This conclusion is based solely on my personal experience, and should not be taken professionally. While it sounds sad that’s how this world works, it’s just simply business.

Let’s move away from the ugly truth. One of the things I love about the fitness industry, is that there are so many creative ways to advertise ‘health and fitness’ products. We came across some truly clever ads that will excite you to get fit. Some of them are provoking, some are hilarious, and one of them actually makes you do neck exercises. We wont spoil that surprise For other advertising professionals who are reading this, we hope these ads will serve as great inspiration for your next project.

Muscles and fats are made up of very different types of cells that have completely different functions. Skeletal muscles get larger when a person exercises primarily from hypertrophy; in other words, the person isn’t gaining more muscle cells (which would be hyperplasia), rather, the ones they have are just getting bigger, with more filaments and the like being developed within the cells to accommodate the more challenging demand on them.

After a person quits exercising, the muscle cells aren’t going away and somehow managing to morph into fat cells; rather, they are simply shrinking. This allows the body to conserve energy when a person’s daily activities don’t require as much muscle mass; muscle cells take quite a bit of energy to maintain (resting caloric usage of 13 Calories per kilogram per day).

The myth that muscles turn to fat when a person stops exercising probably stems from the fact that people who body build or otherwise exercise quite a bit, who then stop exercising, tend to start looking a little squishy around the edges. There are a few different things that contribute to this, but primarily, it all comes down to caloric intake.

Specifically, people who exercise regularly tend to accustom themselves to eating quite a bit more food than people who maintain a relatively healthy body weight without exercising. Once they stop exercising though, they instantly lose the need for the calories used during their workouts, which is often quite significant.

It gets worse though. Over time, as their body loses muscle mass, their body needs significantly fewer calories even when they aren’t working out. As noted before, resting skeletal muscle cells burn approximately 13 Calories per kilogram per day or around 6 Calories per pounds per day. So they’ll even see quite a difference there while they’re just sitting around doing nothing.

So bottom line, people who exercise regularly who suddenly stop, tend to gain fat quickly because they don’t adjust their food intake to compensate for their decreased caloric needs, not because muscle cells are somehow turning into fat cells.

Bonus Factoids:

There are three main types of muscle cells. The first is smooth muscle, which lines the walls of certain blood vessels and the walls of the esophagus, uterus, stomach, urethra, bladder, and intestines, among other places; this type of muscle is considered involuntary. The second type is cardiac muscle, which is also involuntary and is only found in the heart. The third type is skeletal muscle, which closely resembles cardiac muscle cells and is what most people think of when they think of muscles. Skeletal muscles are attached to ligaments which in turn are attached to bones. Cardiac muscle cells tend to be connected in irregular angles, which are called intercalated discs. Skeletal muscle cells, on the other hand, tend to be arranged in parallel bundles.

Within the types of muscle fibers that we can consciously control, there are slow twitch and fast twitch types. Slow twitch muscle cells are much weaker than fast twitch muscle cells, but they are designed for endurance. Fast twitch muscle cells are relatively strong compared to their slow twitch counterparts, but by virtue of their design, have very little staying power.

How muscle cells work is as follows: they contain microscopic filaments with even smaller fibers attached to these filaments. When electricity is carried into the muscle from the outer membrane, the fibers from the filaments hook onto fibers from other filaments and push against each other, thus causing the contraction.

Muscle soreness after workouts, generally appearing the next day, is not caused by lactic acid, as was once thought. Rather, it is caused by tiny tears in the muscle fibers themselves.

Muscles are approximately 18-26% efficient in terms of the total metabolic cost vs. the actual mechanical work done.

On average, 42% of an adult man’s body mass is made up of skeletal muscle. For women, that number drops to 36% on average.

As noted, skeletal muscles consume about 13 Calories per kilogram per day. So, if you weigh approximately 81 kg (180 pounds) and are a man, your skeletal muscles will burn around 442 Calories per day when you are just sit around all day [(81 kg*.42)*13 Calories/kg]. If you are an average female at that same mass, you’ll burn about 379 Calories from your at rest skeletal muscles per day.

Fat cells will burn around 4.5 Calories per kilogram or approximately 1/3 what skeletal muscle cells will burn. How much of your body mass is made up of fat cells varies greatly from person to person, but you can use a body fat test to get that number and then easily figure out how many Calories your fat cells burn per day. ((BodyFatPercentage * weight in kg)*4.5 Calories/kg)

Bone cells burn about 2.3 Calories per kilogram. If you are a man, on average about 15% of your body mass is made up of bone. For women, that number is around 12%.

What is the most expensive car in the world? The 1931 Bugatti Royale Kellner Coupe was sold for $8,700,000 in 1987. However, that car and many alike will not be included in this list because it is not available on the market today. It is hard to imagine someone would actually spend 8 million dollars on a car instead of using it for something more productive. However, if you had the money and opportunity, you would probably spend a small fraction of it on a collection of supercars for your private garage.

Here are the 10 most expensive production cars on the market; we will not include concept cars.

1. Bugatti Veyron Super Sports $2,400,000. This is by far the most expensive street legal car available on the market today (the base Veyron costs $1,700,000). It is the fastest accelerating car reaching 0-60 in 2.5 seconds. It is also the fastest street legal car when tested again on July 10, 2010 with the 2010 Super Sport Version reaching a top speed of 267 mph. When competing against the Bugatti Veyron, you better be prepared!

2. Pagani Zonda Clinque Roadster $1,850,000. One of the most exotic cars out there is one of the most expensive. It can go from 0-60 in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 217 mph.

We have a tie for 3rd place:

3. Lamborghini Reventon $1,600,000. The most powerful and the most expensive Lamborghini ever built is the third on the list. It takes 3.3 seconds to reach 60 mph and it has a top speed of 211 mph. Its rarity (limited to 20) and slick design are the reasons why it is so expensive and costly to own.

3. Koenigsegg Agera R $1,600,000. The Agera R can burn 0-60 in 2.8 seconds, reaching a maximum speed of 260 mph. It has the parts to reach 270 mph, but the supercar is electronically capped at 235 mph. With the completion of certain paperwork, the company will unlock the speed limit for one occasion.

4. McLaren F1 $970,000. In 1994, the McLaren F1 was the fastest and most expensive car. Even though it was built 15 years ago, it has an unbelievable top speed of 240 mph and reaching 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. Even today, the McLaren F1 is still top on the list and outperforms many other supercars.

5. Ferrari Enzo $670,000. The most popular supercar ever built. The Enzo has a top speed of 217 mph and reaching 60 mph in 3.4 seconds. Only 400 units were produced and it is currently being sold for over $1,000,000 at auctions.

6. Pagani Zonda C12 F $667,321. Produced by a small independent company in Italy, the Pagani Zonda C12 F is the 6th most expensive car in the world. It promises to delivery a top speed of 215 mph+ and it can reach 0-60 in 3.5 seconds.

7. SSC Ultimate Aero $654,400. Don’t let the price tag fool you, the 7th most expensive car is actually the 3rd fastest street legal car in the world with a top speed of 257 mph+ and reaching 0-60 in 2.7 seconds. This baby cost less than half as much as the Bugatti Veyron, yet has enough power to compete against the most expensive car. It is estimated that only 25 of this exact model will ever be produced.

8. Ascari A10 $650,000. This badboy can reach a tested top speed of 215 mph, zooming 0-60 in 2.8 seconds. The British car company plans to assemple 50 of these supercars in their factory in Banbury, England.

9. Saleen S7 Twin Turbo $555,000.
10. Koenigsegg CCX $545,568. Swedish made, the Koenigsegg is fighting hard to become the fastest car in the world. Currently, it is the 5th fastest car in the world with a top speed of 245 mph+, the car manufacture Koenigsegg has just released the Koenigsegg Agera R to compete against the Bugatti Veyron. The company is a tough contender and will continue to try and produce the fastest car in the world. Good luck with that!

Sometimes it pays to be weird. The Queen Monster grossed $170 million on 137 shows in 22 countries over the past 12 months and has sold an estimated 15 million albums worldwide. No surprise that advertisers want a piece: endorsement deals include Polaroid, Virgin Mobile, Monster Cable, Viva Glam and PlentyOfFish.com. A Russian billionaire reportedly paid $1 million to appear in her “Alejandro” video. Her new album, Born This Way, hit stores in May; the title track clocked one million downloads in five days, making it the fastest-selling song in iTunes history.

As her long-running syndicated show winds down, Winfrey is doing all she can to make her new cable station, OWN, a success. The network features shows like The Judds about the mother daughter country music team. Ratings so far have been anemic leading to the ouster of chief executive Christina Norman.

The ageless rockers are wrapping up the most lucrative tour in the history of music. In April the group’s 360 Tour surpassed the Rolling Stones’ Bigger Bang Tour, which grossed $554 million from 2005 to 2007. By the time U2′s tour ends this summer, the band will have sold $700 million worth of tickets over two years and played to more than 7 million people.

Sir Elton has sold 250 million records worldwide over the past 30 years and isn’t slowing down, he grossed $204 million performing 102 live shows in the past 12 months. The Rocket Man still has time for family. With partner David Furnish, he welcomed surrogate son Zachary in 2010. Lady Gaga is the tyke’s godmother.

Woods has struggled to win tournaments and sign new sponsorship deals since his November 2009 car crash and the infidelity scandal that followed. Yet Woods continues to be the world’s best-paid athlete thanks to $3 million overseas appearance fees and two sponsors that stuck with him: Nike and Electronic Arts. First week sales this spring of EA Sports’ Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters were the highest in the 14-year history of the popular video game franchise.

Her new album Speak Now was certified triple-platinum barely a month after its October release. Touring brings gross ticket sales of some $750,000 per night.
Who says you can’t go home? Bon Jovi opened New Jersey’s New Meadowlands Stadium with three consecutive sold out concerts last May and another in July. The band grossed $200 million playing 74 shows over the past 12 months and released a greatest hits album. Frontman Jon Bon Jovi was named to the White House Council for Community Solutions by President Obama.

Cowell’s exit from American Idol this year didn’t kill the show, but it left fans hungry for his biting criticism. Lucky for them, the American version of Cowell’s The X Factor is slated to launch on Fox this fall. Cowell has said that the format, which allows for single and group performers over the age of 12, is his favorite. It doesn’t hurt that he’s revived the old Idol chemistry by hiring on fellow former judge Paula Abdul.

James’ reputation took a hit last summer when he announced he was leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat on a national televised special dubbed “The Decision.” His negative Q score soared 77%. Despite the animosity, James continues to be a hot ticket. His jersey was the NBA’s best seller this season and he has the No. 1 basketball shoe on the market.

In April, James partnered with Fenway Sports Group to manage his business interests. As part of the deal James received a very small stake in FSG-owned soccer club, Liverpool.

History Supreme

Tongues have been wagging as to the identity of this mysterious Malaysian. Is he Robert Kuok, the richest man in Malaysia? Or Ananda Krishnan, the second richest Malaysian? However it is highly unlikely to be either of them as they are both shrewd businessmen who won’t splash such a substantial portion of their wealth on a single toy. Hmmm…that would mean this mystery man could be a politician.

Who can it be? I really don’t know. Try asking the Sarawakians. The yacht, named History Supreme or Baia 100 Supreme, is the creation of renowned luxury goods designer Stuart Hughes. Stuart is the creator of the famous £5million diamond-wrapped iPhone.

Roman Abramovich’s ECLIPSE (Photo image by ship and yacht photographer Klaus Kehrls)

The cost of the 100 feet long History Supreme even eclipses that of Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich’s swanky 533 feet yacht Eclipse (cost £750million) which is the world’s biggest private yacht.

Plush bedroom on History Supreme

Stuart Hughes said: “I was commissioned for the “History Supreme” project by an anonymous Malaysian business man who wanted something really special.”

“It was probably the most mammoth task I have undertaken so far, there was three years of planning and it was very difficult to get right.”

“The project uses 100,000 kilograms of solid gold and platinum and all features including the deck,” he said.

“It was probably the most mammoth task ever. I’ve covered all sorts of things in gold but this has got to be my most ambitious project yet. This will never be topped.

“The businessman just approached us and asked us whether we could do it. He wanted a plane doing as well, but the thing would never take off if we did.

“So he said, ‘Can you do the yacht?’ and I said, ‘We’ll give it a crack.’ Then it was pretty much a case of can you make this gold, can you make that gold?

“We just did what we were told and are delighted with the result.”

The yacht was built in Italy and completed in Malaysia during July 2011.

Is your jogging route not giving you the same satisfaction it once did? And are you tired of athletic events that only last a couple of measly hours? Then it sounds like you need more pain and suffering in your life! Luckily, there are numerous sporting challenges that have been designed for the sole purpose of torturing their participants with insane demands. Taking part in any one of the following 10 events should be enough to ensure that you never want to exercise again!

10. The Tough Guy

The Tough Guy is a 12km foot race, but don’t let the short distance fool you. The creator of the course, believing that nature can’t provide a racetrack that’s hardcore enough for him, has built a series of obstacles that combine aspects of American Gladiators with the Vietnam War. Competitors climb up log walls, shimmy up poles to slide across high ropes, run through fire pits, navigate through sewer pipes, wade across chest deep water and crawl under barbed wire while smoke bombs go off over their heads. Oh, and it takes place in the middle of January. Sounds fun, right?

The event, which is held on some crazy British guy’s private land, can attract up to 6000 people each year. Injuries are common, and two people have even been killed, which is why you have to sign a “death warrant” before taking part. All in all, it sounds like an amazing competition to sign your friend up for while you heckle him from the sidelines.

9. The Barkley Marathon

The Barkley Marathon held at Frozen Head State Park, Tennessee is a 161km run, but that’s not the hard part. It’s the staggering 18,000 metre climb that causes problems; well, that and the fact that there isn’t one of those fancy pants “trails” for you to follow. Oh, and there are tons of thorns and briars, collapsed trees are everywhere, and it tends to rain. A lot.

Since 1986 about 700 people have attempted the annual marathon, but only nine have finished under the 60 hour time limit. The cut-off time seems harsh considering the course record is 55 hours and 42 minutes; you’d think that just letting people complete this gruelling event would be challenging enough. But if it’s too much for you, you could always try the 97km “fun run” instead. You get 40 hours for that light-hearted adventure!

8. Norseman Xtreme Triathlon

It’s obvious this race means business- just look at how they spelled “extreme.” At 226km it’s about the length of an Ironman triathlon, but there are enough differences to make even seasoned Ironman competitors look like… uh… normal men? Ironwimps? The Norseman is tough, is what we’re trying to say here.

For starters, the race takes place in Norway, so the swim takes place in water that, if you’re lucky, will reach a temperature of 17C. The bike leg is pretty standard, but the run takes you up a mountain, and you don’t get the benefit of a road for very long. The last 17km has competitors gaining almost 2000 metres in elevation, and they’re doing it on a rocky mountain path. Plus, there’s a risk of “extreme weather conditions.” Well, at least it’s not “Xtreme weather conditions,” because then you’d really be in trouble.

7. The Marathon des Sables

Running a marathon is a nice achievement and all, but if you really want to challenge yourself you should run six of them over consecutive days. And you should do it in southern Morocco, at a time of year where the temperature tends to be around 50C. Oh, and forget about paved roads; it’s rocks and sand dunes for you. And did we mention that you have to carry your sleeping bag, food and other supplies on your back, and that you have to cook for yourself every night? The Marathon des Sables could be the first race in history lost due to culinary ineptitude instead of poor fitness.

About 700 people enter the event each year, which is about 700 more than we’d expect. The total distance ends up being roughly 243km, and the record completion time is 19.5 hours. There is prize money, but most contestants are just interested in finishing the race. Because, you know, running across a desert for six straight days is good, leisurely fun; you’d have to be crazy to try and win.

6. Everest Challenge

Contrary to what you might think from its name, this two day, 332km bike race actually takes place in California, not on the side of Mount Everest. Don’t worry, it still has a vertical climb of 9144 metres, making it comparable to the Barkley Marathon. There’s barely a flat area on the whole course; you’re pretty much biking uphill the entire way, sometimes at a grade of 20%. And since it takes around 14 hours to complete the challenge, your legs have little chance of coming out intact. That’s assuming you even finish; plenty of people give up after day one, because it’s just too taxing on the body. But at least the route is scenic; there’s something about a beautiful mountain vista that can really put crippling leg injuries in perspective.

5. The Ultraman

If you’re anything like us, you scoff at normal triathlons and consider Ironman events to be a light warm-up before your daily summit of Everest. You’d also be a pathological liar, but we digress. The Ultraman is an event for people just like that, because why settle for the title of Ironman when you can sound like a 1960s Japanese action hero? Also, there’s probably immense personal satisfaction from completing this challenge or some nonsense like that.

This three day, 515km race has been held annually in Hawaii since 1983. Day one consists of a 10km swim through the ocean followed by a 145km bike ride. Day two has contestants biking for another 276km, and on day three the Ultraman concludes with an 84km run, the equivalent of two marathons. Only 35 people are allowed to compete every year, and the winner usually boasts a completion time of just under 24 hours. Yeah, you know a race is intense when the best of the best takes about a day to finish.

4. The Simpson Desert Bike Challenge

This is the biking equivalent of the Marathon des Sables, as contestants spend five days cycling across remote parts of the Australian outback. Most of the 590km is spent going over sand dunes and rocky plains, all the while putting up with intense heat and swarms of bugs. The only chance of relief from the scorching sun comes in the form of rain, but that tends to create bogs that are incredibly difficult to bike though. Also, you’re in constant danger of being bitten by a killer spider or having your stuff stolen at night, just like every other visitor to Australia.

The winning time is usually around 40 gruelling hours. On the plus side, participants can have a support crew to prepare meals, do laundry, and so on. Gee, that practically makes this a relaxing vacation.

3. Yukon Arctic Ultra

What is it with these challenges and being “ultra”? Ultra doesn’t even begin to describe this event: it’s a 702km race through the arctic, which participants can complete on either bikes, skis, or, if they hate themselves, foot. That much distance is tough enough on its own, never mind the fact that the average temperature is -20C, (it can get as low as a horrifying -55C), and that blizzards are common. They might as well use angry polar bears to guard the checkpoints.

This is the only race we know of where you’re required to bring a headlamp, 48 hours’ worth of emergency food, and, most worryingly, an avalanche shovel. And that’s just a small portion of the junk you have to carry around with you, as if wading through heavy snow doesn’t slow you down enough. That explains why there’s a strict time limit of 13 days for completion, although most people end up being forced to retire well before that. Reports of competitors getting lost and forced to eat each other to survive remain unconfirmed, but it sounds inevitable to us.

2. The Iditarod

Easily the most famous event on our list, the Iditarod is an 1868km dog sled race across Alaska. Of course, it’s the team of 16 dogs that’s doing most of the work, but the whiteout conditions, blizzards and wind chill that can drop the temperature to a balmy -73C makes this event tough on the driver as well. And the sheer length is a huge factor; the record completion time is just under nine days, and it can take as long as 15 for some people to finish. So while “sitting on your keester and telling your dogs to get a move on” may not constitute a sport in the traditional sense, the fact that you’re doing it for a week and a half in a raging snowstorm is enough to qualify this as an athletic event. Plus, the dogs are probably better athletes than most of us, so they deserve some recognition.

1. The Atlantic Rowing Race

Yes, that’s “Atlantic” as in “The Atlantic Ocean.” Beginning in 1997 and held every two years, the race starts in the Canary Islands and ends in the West Indies. At 4722km it’s longer than every other event on our list combined, and the 2009 edition took contestants anywhere from 40 to 90 days to complete. Any race where you need to quit your job beforehand redefines the idea of serious dedication. It also redefines insanity.

Most of the boats are manned by pairs or teams of four, because if you’re going to put your life on hold to row across the Atlantic Ocean you might as well bring some friends along. A few particularly brave people have attempted the journey solo, however. That’s three months of sitting in a tiny boat by yourself, living off of ration packs and straining your muscles to row across choppy ocean water. You’ll have to decide for yourselves if that’s inspirational or just crazy, because we have no idea.

Top Gear started in the late 70’s as a local program produced by BBC Birmingham and has established itself as the world’s most popular motoring show.

Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May have witnessed Top Gear growing into a global phenomenon, so no wonder it’s the most illegally downloaded show on the planet.

According to Dailymail.co.uk, Top Gear has a global audience of over 360 million people in more than 100 countries. The long-running show conquered the world with good old fashioned British humor and dedication. Enjoy watching some of Top Gear’s most entertaining moments:

10. Top Gear Stunt Man Setting a World Record

A new character, Top Gear Stunt Man, was introduced in Top Gear’s first episode of the 11th series, 2008. The goal was to break the world record of most cars jumped over by a vehicle driven backwards. Top Gear decided to use an Austin Allegro, “a car that was famous for being more aerodynamic going backwards than it is going forwards,” claimed May. It turned out that this record didn’t exist, so Top GearStunt Man set a world record on his very first appearance on the show.

9. Car Football World Cup

Believe it or not, car football is actually played in America and as I see it, it’s a lot more fun to watch and play than real football.

A team of Toyota Aygos takes on the Volkswagen Foxes in a game of car football in the 5th episode of the 8th series. James May captains the yellow Foxes and battles against Richard Hammond and his Aygos that are apparently made in the Czech Republic, and not Japan. Which small smart car do you think will prove victorious?

8. Range Rover vs. Challenger II

Challenger II is a British main battle tank (MBT) advertised as the world’s fastest and most reliable MBT. Jeremy Clarkson reviewed the awesome Range Rover Sport while testing it in a battle against the Challenger II tank on Salisbury Plain. The conclusion? That’s one impressive off-road car! The Ranger Rover Sport is a very good off-road car, but if you are planning on invading another country, use a tank

7. Alabama, Lethal Car Decorating

This US Special is an episode of the ninth series that sparked quite some controversy. It features Richard, James and Jeremy taking a road trip across Southern America. The catch? Each of them were given $1,000 to buy a car that will carry them to their destination. There were five challenges to overcome and at the end of the epic road trip, the cars had to be sold to see which host could get most of the money back.

Lethal Car Decorating was the fourth challenge. Prior to entering in Alabama, Richard, James and Jeremy were instructed to spray paint provocative statements on their cars to test the limits of Southern hospitality. Slogans like “Hillary for President”, “Country and Western is Rubbish” “NASCAR Sucks”, “I’m bi” and Man-love rules OK” didn’t go down too well with some of Alabama’s locals. The trio raised the fury of the locals to the highest pitch and the situation got very ugly.

6. Race on Water

Want to get off the old, beaten path…literally? Iceland with its spectacular landscape is the place for you, off road motor sport at its best!

Richard Hammond visited Iceland a couple of years ago and raced a buggy, a modified off-road vehicle, against a snowmobile over the third largest lake in southern Iceland, Lake Kleifarvatn. Hard to believe that a one and a half ton off roader could be driven on water? Just watch this video. The perfect combination of pressure, tire shape and speed prevents the water’s surface from breaking.

5. Crossing the English Channel in Car Boats

Richard, James and Jeremy were challenged by the producers to cross the English Channel in home-made amphibious cars. This was their second attempt. Jeremy built an amphibious Nissan pickup (nicknamed Nissank), James upgraded the same Triumph Herald he had used in the first attempt of crossing the Channel and Richard modified a Volkswagen Transporter (nicknamed Dampervan). The last two vehicles sank, so Jeremy Clarkson and his Nissan won the challenge.

4. Car Darts

James and Richard played darts in the fourth episode of the fourth series with second hand cars. Where? In a real quarry! They used scrap cars as darts and a caravan as the bull’s-eye. In a James Bond movie there is always a scene where a car makes a crazy leap through the air. How do they do this? By firing the car from a gas-powered cannon, so Richard and James were wondering what else could they do with that cannon. Here’s the result, a simplified, super-duper round of darts.

3. Funniest review ever

Offended by Mr. Needham, a fan who complained that Top Gear doesn’t review cars properly anymore, the hosts decided to take the 2010 Ford Fiesta and do a serious road test, including an exhilarating car chase inside a mall and a Royal Marine beach assault!
The road test was conducted by Jeremy Clarkson and was divided into nine major segments:
Is the Ford Fiesta practical?
Is it economical?
Is it fun to drive?
Will it break down all the time?
Is it easy to park?
What if I go to a Shopping Centre and get chased by baddies in a Corvette?
Is it green?
Can I afford it?
What if I’m asked to take part in a beach assault with the Royal Marines?
I couldn’t believe the ending, they are insane! This has got to be one of Top Gear’s coolest reviews ever.

2. Bugatti Veyron vs. Euro Fighter Typhoon

The second place goes to one of the most watched videos of Top Gear on YouTube. No wonder this challenge is widely recognized as Top Gear’s greatest race.

The legendary Bugatti Veyron is not just the world’s most expensive car, but it’s also the fastest. Richard raced a $1.4 million Bugatti Veyron against the highly agile and sophisticated multirole combat aircraft, the Euro Fighter Typhoon. Who do you think that won the horizontal vs. vertical two mile drag race?

(Series 13, Episode 3, 2009)

1. James May and Kent Block vs. Ricky Carmichael

James May meet stunt-driving legend Ken Block and Ricky Carmichael, the greatest dirt-biker in history, on an airfield in California. Ken Block took James for a spin in his Subaru Impreza rally car and shortly after, Ricky Carmichael joined the ride. Known as G.O.A.T., aka the Greatest of All Time, Ricky “retired from Supercross/Motocross racing at the end of 2007 having won 16 AMA titles. He also won every singlerace in the 2002 and 2004 Motocross seasons. Carmichael has now begun a new career in stock car racing,” wrote Crash.net.

Superlatives fail to describe this extraordinary and visually stunning Top Gear moment.
